AUTUMN MISCHIEF

Beyond the joys of August,
Through September's bright, blue days,
Awaits the Autumn's mischief child
In shadows where she plays.

Astride October's harvest winds,
Her laughter, loud and clear,
Leaves little doubt in any heart
Thanksgiving time is near!

She spreads an icy frosting
In the dawning's early morn,
Across the stubbled wheat field
And above the harvest corn.

For just a while she slows her pace
For Indian Summer's fun,
Then gently. nudges her aside
To dim November's sun.

Alas, at times it slips her mind
That winter stays not warm,
And ofttimes she must hurry on
To flee December's storm!
